A Leitchfield man was arrested after attempting to flee police on a moped scooter.

Sunday morning, at 12:49 a.m., Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Andy Cast attempted to pull over a moped without any rear lighting near the intersection of Beaver Dam Road and Shrewsbury Road.

The driver, 30-year-old Cody Sermon, of Leitchfield, refused to stop and “kept making abrupt back and forth lane (movements)” while looking back at the officer, according to the citation.

Cast was joined in the chase at this time by deputy Sean Fentress.

The pursuit continued for over one mile before Sermon “made a quick maneuver” onto Hill Lane where he lost control of the vehicle. He then attempted to flee on foot around a small shed.

The citation says that Sermon refused multiple commands to stop but didn’t. Cast then deployed his Taser on the suspect who then refused to turn over onto his stomach. The officers had to “forcefully place handcuffs on him.”

Sermon was taken to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center for medical clearance before being transported to the Grayson County Detention Center.

He was charged with fleeing or evading police in a motor vehicle and on foot, driving on a DUI suspended license, wanton endangerment of a police officer, no tail lamps, resisting arrest, reckless driving, and criminal trespassing.

In October 2018, Sermon was arrested in Grayson County after stealing a Lexus passenger car from the Leitchfield FiveStar parking lot, then being found in the stolen vehicle 90 minutes later, passed out behind the wheel in a private drive on Frontage Road. He fought with police upon being woken up and had to be dragged out of the car.

In March 2021, he was arrested by the Hardin County Detention Center and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
