An inmate at the Daviess County Detention Center is dead following a ‘physical altercation.’

22-year-old Darrius Quarles was found unresponsive early Sunday morning in one of the housing units of the jail, according to the Owensboro Times.

Jailer Art Maglinger told the newspaper that the deputy that discovered Quarles immediately called for on-site medical personnel to respond.

Quarles was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead a little under an hour after being found.

Kentucky State Police is handling the investigation and an autopsy will be performed by the Daviess County Coroner’s Office.
