The body of a woman who disappeared two years ago, and was discovered in April 2021, has been identified.

The remains of 36-year-old Kandi G. Gonzales were found on April 27, 2022, near the Left Fork of Abbott community, about five miles west of Prestonsburg. On Wednesday, Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson confirmed to WYMT.com that the remains had been positively identified as Gonzales.

Gonzales, the mother of a six-year-old boy, was last seen alive on Abbott Creek Road on June 1, 2021, a short distance from where her body was found.

Her shoes were found in a nearby creek two days after she went missing, resulting in multiple searches being undertaken and included the use of helicopters and drones as well as tracking and cadaver dogs.

The cause of death is not yet known. Kentucky State Police is leading the ongoing death investigation.
