The name of the man shot and killed late Friday night on Mt. Zion Road has been released.

Kentucky State Police is leading a death investigation after a female shot and killed 48-year-old Basil Ashley, formerly of Leitchfield (Fern Creek is listed as his current address), on Mt. Zion Road, about 10 mile southeast of Clarkson.

Grayson County Deputies Justin Cockerel and Tim Jackson, the East Grayson Fire Department and EMS responded to the shooting at approximately 11:15 Friday night at a residence in the 1200 block of Mt. Zion Road after the female notified Grayson County Dispatch that she twice shot Ashley.

She told dispatch she shot Ashley in the leg and chest.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found that Ashely was deceased. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Grayson County Coroner James Embry.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office then requested Kentucky State Police respond.

KSP’s preliminary investigation, led by Det. Joey Beasley, showed that the 45-year-old female shot Ashley after he “forcibly entered a bedroom occupied by the resident …,” according to KSP Post 4 Public Affairs Officer Scotty Sharp.

Further investigation revealed that Ashley and the female were at one time in a relationship which had a history of domestic violence, Sharp added, emphasizing this was not a random home invasion. The case will be presented to a Grayson County Grand Jury.

The body was transported to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville for an autopsy.

The female was transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center for “observation of previous health issues,” Sharp said.

Assisting at the scene was Grayson County Sgt. Jordan Jones, along with multiple troopers.

The investigation is ongoing.
