Two small children helped save three adults trapped in a “deep ravine” near a campground in Adair County.

Adair County Emergency Management (ACEM) Director Mike Keltner said in a social media post that Tuesday night at approximately 5:30, first responders were dispatched to Holmes Bend Campground, about 10 miles northeast of Columbia. The response came after two female juveniles (approximately eight-years-old) notified Adair E911 that several adults “had fallen into a deep ravine (and) were stuck and were possibly in the water.”

Upon arriving at the scene, the little girls were placed in an ambulance and “they led us to the scene of the incident which began on the campground trail then continued off trail toward” Green River Lake,” Keltner said.

“We were met with one possibly injured female that had made her way back up to the top of the ravine and were told that there were three more people stuck on a cliff between two rock drop-offs,” according to Keltner.

Rescuers then made visual contact with multiple people stuck in the ravine, and who were unable to move along a “cliffside.”

“Rope access was established for responders and the stuck persons were assisted to the top of the ravine,” Keltner stated.

After approximately 40 minutes, the stranded individuals were rescued. They suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

“I would like to thank the brave girls that made the report,” Keltner said, as well as “ … the responders for the quick assistance provided.”
