A small-town police officer has been shot and the suspect has not been identified.

The shooting occurred Monday afternoon on Scott Street at approximately 3:15 in Olive Hill in Carter County, according to WSAZ.com. Kentucky State Police said the shot came from a wooded area and the suspect is currently unknown.

Immediately after the shooting, state police issued the following Public Safey Alert: “Do not leave your home or any business. This is a safety issue. Stay off the streets.”

The injured officer, who was not responding to a call and was sitting in a parked cruiser when he was shot, was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia. The officer was shot in the arm.

Olive Hill is a town of about 1,500 residents.

(UPDATE: Kentucky State Police revised its statement on the shooting to say that the officer was hit by flying glass from a gunshot that struck the passenger window of the cruiser. The officer was not shot.)
