The Hart County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man wanted in connection to the overdose/drowning death of James Jewell in April 2023.

Jewell, 32, of Canmer, was reported missing to the Hart County Sheriff’s Office on April 14. He had last been seen on April 11 when he was given a ride to a power substation on Glen Lily Road in Hart County.

On April 19, a body was discovered in the Thomas Bend area of Green River by the Hart County Rescue Squad. The next day, the body was identified by the state Medical Examiner’s Office as that of James Jewell.

The autopsy, according to the Hart County Sheriff’s Office, “concluded that Jewell’s body had no lethal trauma, and his death was attributed to acute methamphetamine intoxication with subsequent asphyxia via drowning in the Green River.”

The following investigation showed that 50-year-old Kevin Jewell, James Jewell’s cousin (according to someone with knowledge of the family), provided the decedent with methamphetamine on or about April 10.

Investigators presented their findings to a Hart County Grand Jury on June 6, with the grand jury returning indictments against Kevin Jewell for second-degree manslaughter and trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine). Jewell, police said, also has “multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest.”

Anyone with information on Kevin Jewell’s location is asked to contact the Hart County Sheriff’s Office at 270-524-2341 or Kentucky State Police at 270-782-2010.
