Leitchfield Parks and Recreation is looking for participants and volunteers for a sanctioned special needs baseball league.
Leitchfield Parks and Recreation Director Tammee Saltsman said that as of Wednesday only 10 special needs individuals have signed up to participate in the Little League Challenger Program. The four-game season is slated to begin in July.
The league, for ages four to 22, is for those with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. The season will consist of two practices and four games lasting one or two innings. The goal is for each game to last one hour, Saltsman said.
Each participant is required by Little League Baseball to be accompanied by a Field Buddy, who helps the participants while they bat, run the bases and field and throw the ball, etc. Field buddies are required to be at least 13-years-old and those 18 or over must undergo a background check.
Saltsman said Little League Baseball prefers Field Buddies to be young people, but that is not a requirement. She added that more Field Buddies are also needed.
T & T Construction, owned by Tommy and Tina Higdon, is sponsoring the league, resulting in no entry fees for participant.
