The American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter who became a ubiquitous presence on Kentucky television screens during the COVID-19 pandemic has died.

Gov. Andy Beshear announced on Sunday on social media that Virginia Moore passed away on Saturday.

No cause of death was given, but Moore was diagnosed with uterine cancer in October 2020. She later announced she was cancer-free but would have to undergo monitoring for the next five years.

Moore, who spent over 25 years with the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing, interpreted Beshear’s “Team Kentucky” nightly pandemic updates during the heart of the health crisis.

“Virginia was a rock of stability and grace during the pandemic,” Beshear said. “She helped bring us all together in our most challenging times, so I hope you’ll join Britainy and me today in praying for all who loved her. I will miss her greatly, but as Virginia would remind us in our grief: We will get through this; we will get through this together.”
