A Hancock County man accused of breaking into a business and stealing thousands of dollars raised for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been arrested.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged 32-year-old Trenton S. Thorpe, of Lewisport, with two counts of third-degree burglary, third-degree theft by unlawful taking, theft by unlawful taking (from a building), and three counts of first-degree criminal mischief.
Thorpe was arrested at his Lewisport residence Wednesday night just before midnight, the sheriff’s office said.
The arrest comes after Thorpe, on Monday night at approximately 8:20, broke into Thompson Tire at 45 Roberts Lane in Lewisport. He gained access to the business by tossing a hammer through the front door glass.
“Once the subject entered he knew what he wanted; this low-life wanted the St. Jude Children’s Hospital board with cash on it, that customers and local citizens give money to for St Jude Children’s Hospital and research to save children,” the sheriff’s office said.
Police said Thorpe stole about $3,000, which was not recovered at his arrest.
Thorpe’s girlfriend, Carie Roberts, is also facing charges in the case, police said. Roberts was not at her and Thorpe’s shared residence when deputies arrived late Wednesday night.
