A Leitchfield man has been jailed after breaking into a home and stealing multiple items.

Thursday night at 6:00, Grayson County Andy Cast responded to a burglary complaint in the 3700 block of Anneta Road. Upon arriving at the scene, the homeowner told Cast the family had been away and “whenever they returned many items (were) missing,” including prescription medication and computers, according to the arrest citation.

The victim said she thought she knew who broke into the home, as the suspect, 46-year-old Brent A. Coates, had “left several items (in the home) that the victim identified” as belonging to Coates, including a backpack, the citation states.

Cast and a Kentucky State Police trooper then traveled to Coates’ residence in the 100 block of Maple Drive. Upon arriving, police made contact with Coates inside the home.

While being questioned about the burglary, Coates admitted that he broke into the home and stole the items.

Coates “gave back most of the items that he took from the house,” police said.

The backpack Coates left behind at the residence contained two computers taken from the victim. The backpack, which was apparently left outside the home, “had been rained on over a couple of days, ruining them,” according to the citation.

Coates was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary, theft of a legend (prescription) drug, first-degree criminal mischief, and first-degree criminal trespassing. He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

Multiple deputies assisted with the investigation.
