A Kentucky high school football player has died after suffering a brain injury during a spring game.
Andrew Dodson, 17, a tight end/defensive end on the Pulaski County High School football team, suffered the injury when he was tackled by a teammate during the school’s Maroon and White Game on Friday.
The junior was rushed to a hospital where he underwent surgery to release pressure on his brain. He was then placed on life support his father, Alan Dodson, told the Herald-Leader. He passed away Monday morning.
“It was not a violent hit or helmet-to-helmet. It was a simple, clean tackle,” Alan Dodson said. “He suffered blunt force trauma to his head.”
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association issued the following statement on Andrew Dodson’s death on social media:
“No words can explain, justify or rationalize tragedies such as these. We only ask for peace and comfort to all around him and around our great commonwealth. We also encourage all to seek out family and friends to walk through this difficult time together and talk through all the emotions that come with losing a friend, brother, comrade, child and teammate. We hold his family and friends close in these times and offer our deepest condolences.”
