An armed man has been arrested after attempting to enter Caverna Elementary School in Cave City.

Devan Howard, 29, was armed with a switchblade knife when he tried to open the rear doors of the school, according to multiple media reports. The school was placed on lockdown.

The School Resource Officer, Josh Neal with the Cave City Police Department, responded and disarmed Howard, with the suspect then fleeing on foot. Neal and Cave City K-9 Officer Avery caught Howard about a half-mile from the school.

Once Howard was captured, the school resumed normal activities.

During a search of Howard, police found methamphetamine. Marijuana was discovered in his vehicle, which was parked in the school parking lot.

Howard was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), fleeing or evading police (on foot), possession of marijuana, public intoxication (excludes alcohol), possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with physical evidence, and non-moving violations.

He was lodged in the Barren County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond.
