The man accused of killing three eastern Kentucky police officers and a K-9 officer while ambushing police as they attempted to serve an arrest warrant has died in jail.
Lance Storz, 50, of Allen, committed suicide Tuesday morning while being held in the Pike County Detention Center, according to Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt. He was found deceased in his cell.
Police were serving a domestic violence-related “court warrant” in the small Floyd County town of Allen when Storz opened fire from inside his home with a rifle.
“They encountered pure hell,” Hunt told news outlets at the time. “They had no chance.”
Three other law enforcement officers received injuries, with two hospitalized. Additionally, one civilian was injured during the incident and received medical care at a hospital.
Storz was arrested after a standoff that lasted about five hours.
The shooting was the deadliest single incident involving law enforcement officers in Kentucky since three officers were killed in a prison riot in 1923, according to NPR.com.
