Three people have been injured after high winds caused a restaurant sign to fall on a car in Elizabethtown.
The incident, according to WDRB meteorologist Marc Weinberg, occurred Thursday afternoon at approximately 1:30 local time at the Denny’s restaurant at 2008 North Mulberry Street. The vehicle was not in a parking spot, but apparently driving by the sign to either park in the Denny’s side lot or visit a restaurant adjacent to Denny’s.
All three adults, one man and two women, who occupied the car have been hospitalized, with one person in critical condition.
Weinberg reports that wind speeds in Elizabethtown have reached 49 miles per hour. In Louisville, peak winds reached 58 mph and in Campbellsville the top wind speed has been 55 mph.
In Grayson County, the top wind speed on Thursday (so far) is 35 mph, according to Kentutucky Mesonet, a statewide weather and climate monitoring system.
UPDATE: The critically injured person, a 72-year-old woman, died at University of Louisville Hospital.
