New Ohio County Sheriff Adam Wright has recognized one of his deputies with the sheriff’s office’s first Above and Beyond Award.

Deputy Nick Eskridge is the recipient of the award which honors former Ohio Co. Deputy Jerry Critchelow.

“This award was and will continue to be given in memory of Deputy Jerry Critchelow, who consistently went far beyond what was required of him in the line of duty as well as in his personal life,” Wright said in a social media post announcing the award.

“Deputy Eskridge was selected to receive this award based not only on my own experience with and observation of him, but also comments and input from the community and other members of our department,” Wright said. “Congratulations, Nick, and thank you for all you do.”

Critchelow suffered a heart attack on April 15, 2022, while directing traffic on Hwy 231 in front of Ohio County High School. He drove himself to the hospital after experiencing symptoms before being airlifted to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.

He passed away five days later.

Critchelow was with the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office for 13 years and was assigned as the agency’s school resource officer. He previously served with Kentucky State Police for 30 years.
