An eastern Kentucky man has been jailed after shooting at police officers and private citizens.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Office said that on Monday night at approximately 5:30, deputies were dispatched to Hwy 119, about one mile southeast of Pineville, on the report of someone shooting at a vehicle.

Responding deputies made contact with the vehicle and confirmed none of the occupants were hit by gunfire. Police, though, located a bullet hole in the car.

“After being told of the direction of the shots by the occupants of the vehicle, the officers approached a residence in the vicinity of the incident,” the sheriff’s office said. “ … as (a deputy) was walking up to the home he saw an individual in the yard bending down grabbing what appeared to be a gun. The individual then ducked behind the house telling someone else to get in the home and lock the door.”

The suspect, 24-year-old Shane Douglas, of Pineville, “then quickly appeared from behind the house and fired a shot in the direction of the officers. The deputies then took cover behind their vehicle and radioed for assistance from area law enforcement. Multiple officers from several agencies responded and prior to their arrival another shot was fired in the direction of the officers,” according to police.

A two-hour standoff ensued, with Hwy 119 shut down and local stores evacuated as police searched for Douglas.

Kentucky State Police then received information that Douglas was in the home police originally approached. Police obtained the residence’s phone number with a peaceful end to the standoff negotiated by law enforcement.

Douglas was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of attempted murder and fleeing or evading police on foot. He was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center.
