The Edmonson County woman who drove around a “Road Closed” sign while on drugs and during a flooding event, resulting in the death of her toddler, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Alexandra Richardson, 31, of Wingfield, according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, is already incarcerated at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women. She is imprisoned on unrelated charges after having her probation revoked less than two weeks after the December 2019 incident that killed her young son. She was previously convicted of criminal facilitation to manufacture methamphetamine and fourth-degree endangerment to a child (controlled substance) and sentenced to five years.

Richardson was sentenced to 20 years on Wednesday in an Edmonson County courtroom after pleading guilty to murder, first-degree wanton endangerment and DUI, according to a report by The Edmonson Voice.

It was during heavy rains and flooding on the night of December 2, 2019, that Richardson drove around the “Road Closed” sign on Oak Hill Road as she attempted to travel over a low water bridge, resulting in her vehicle stalling.

Richardson tried to make it to safety with Carson McCullough, her 20-month-old son, and her seven-year-old child, but she wandered into deep water and lost her grip on Carson. He was found about an hour later by first responders and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he passed away later that night.

Upon being questioned by the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office, Richardson admitted she used methamphetamine and marijuana prior to the incident. Deputies then obtained a search warrant for Richardson’s home, with authorities finding marijuana and suspected methamphetamine.
