Kentucky State Police and other law enforcement agencies responded Friday to a riot at an Adair County juvenile detention center.

Friday night at approximately 9:40, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the Adair Regional Detention Center in Columbia after a juvenile detainee assaulted a staff member and took the employee’s keys, releasing other detainees from their cells, Kentucky State Police said.

Several juveniles and staff members were injured during the incident. The severity of those injuries has not been released.

It’s unclear how long it took for authorities to regain control of the facility or how many juveniles were involved in the riot.

Kentucky State Police, the Internal Investigations Branch of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice are leading the investigation.
