A Magoffin County school bus crash has critically injured multiple students and the driver.

At a press conference early Monday afternoon, Kentucky State Police Post 9 Public Affairs Officer Michael Coleman said that police responded Monday morning at 7:21 to the crash on Hwy 40, just east of Salyersville.

Coleman said the preliminary investigation showed the westbound bus, carrying 18 students, left the roadway and traveled down an embankment. The bus came to rest on its side.

The students were on their way to elementary schools, the county’s middle school and Magoffin County High School, Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Chris Meadows said.

Two students and the female driver, who suffered critical injuries, were airlifted to hospitals. All other students were transported by ambulance or private vehicles to multiple hospitals, according to Meadows. Those students’ injuries range from minor to critical, Coleman said.

Kentucky State Police is leading the investigation.
