Grayson County and much central and western Kentucky are under an enhanced threat of wildfires on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The NWS says the increased risk of wildfires Tuesday afternoon is based on relative humidity values forecast to drop to near 20 percent, while northeasterly winds of 10 to 20 miles per hour will be present across the region.
“The combination of low relative humidity and dry ground fuels will be favorable for increased fire danger,” the NWS states. “Any fires that start could rapidly spread out of control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.”
Over the last month, instigated by drought conditions, there have been well over 20 woods/grass fires in Grayson County ranging from a few acres burned to several dozen acres. Structures, including mobile homes and outbuildings, have been destroyed in the fires.
Between October 21 and 23, during similar conditions, fire departments in Grayson County battled a half-dozen fires of varying sizes, burning about 50 acres and destroying multiple structures.
