A Bowling Green man has died after crossing the median on I-65 in Barren County and striking a vehicle.

According to Kentucky State Police, troopers responded to the crash Wednesday morning at approximately 6:00 near the 50-mile marker of southbound I-65, between the Cave City and Park City exits.

Police said the preliminary investigation showed that 65-year-old Joseph E. Gilkey, of Bowling Green, had been driving a 2021 Toyota SUV north when he exited the left side of the roadway and entered the gravel median.

The Toyota continued into the southbound lanes, police said, where it struck a 2010 Saturn SUV, being driven by Amy J. Lee, of Hamilton, Ohio.

Gilkey was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Barren County Coroner’s Office.

Lee was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where police said she is listed in stable condition.

Two juveniles in Lee’s vehicle were transported to T.J. Samson Community Hospital by EMS. Their conditions were not released.

The investigation is being led by Trooper Michael Wathen.
