A fiery semi truck crash on a bridge on the Bluegrass Parkway shut down the major thoroughfare for hours Tuesday morning and afternoon.
The accident, which happened at the 29-mile marker in the eastbound lanes at approximately 6:30 a.m., occurred on a bridge that spans the Kentucky River between the Lawrenceburg and Versailles exits, near the Anderson-Woodford County line, according to the Versailles Police Department.
The crash, which officials told news outlets could have been caused by dense fog, left the cab of the tractor-trailer dangling precariously over the side of the bridge.
The driving team composed of two drivers suffered non-life threatening lacerations and burns. They were transported to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.
The truck was carrying empty Mountain Dew cans.
Diesel fuel and oil spilled into the Kentucky River initiating a response from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. The bridge was inspected by Kentucky Highway Department officials.
The eastbound parkway reopened at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said.
