A daytime burn ban is now in effect in Grayson County and throughout Kentucky.
The Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF) prohibits burning within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. during the fall wildfire season, which ends on December 15.
State officials urge anyone burning debris during allowable hours to use caution and attend the fire until it is extinguished.
In spring 2022, the KDF responded to nearly 100 wildland fires between January 1 and mid-February. The largest of those fires was in Fleming County on Goddard Mountain. Many of the wildfires were attributed to debris burning, according to a statement from the KDF.
Before deciding to burn, officials suggest monitoring weather patterns, including humidity levels and wind speeds.
The penalty for violating the burn ban is a maximum $500 fine.
