Two people died in separate house fires in Kentucky in 48 hours.

The latest victim was killed in a structure fire in McLean County on Friday morning.

According to Kentucky State Police, first responders were dispatched to a residential fire Friday morning at approximately 8:45 in the 300 block of Garrett Street in Sacramento. A man’s body was discovered inside the home during a post-fire investigation, which preliminarily showed a faulty portable heater may have caused the blaze, police said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday in Madisonville.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by Kentucky State Police, the State Fire Marshal’s Office and McLean County Coroner’s Office.

On Wednesday morning, Kentucky State Police and other first responders arrived at a house fire on Hwy 552 in the Putney community in Harlan County.

State police said firefighters battled intense heat in extinguishing the fire, and it took several hours for the scene to cool enough for investigators to enter the structure. Once it was safe, cadaver dogs located human remains in the burned home.

The remains were transported to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.

Foul play is not suspected, according to officials. Kentucky State Police is investigating.

Neither victim has been publicly identified by authorities.
