Multiple buildings were evacuated Wednesday at Western Kentucky University as students were told to “stay clear of the top of the hill” after a “potential explosive device” was located near Cherry Hall.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms was summoned to the scene and within about 90 minutes of the initial alert being sent to students at 10:25 Wednesday morning, agents determined the device was construction-related material and not an explosive.
Classes resumed just before 2:00 Wednesday afternoon.
Then, at approximately 12:15, the WKU Police Department said a social media post threatened the area near Parking Structure 2, adjacent to the Downing Student Union and between Diddle Arena and L.T. Smith Stadium.
Further investigation by police determined the threat was not valid and was meant as a joke.
Police arrested a WKU student, 20-year-old Hailee Alexis Reed, of Stanford, and charged her with first-degree terroristic threatening, a class C felony punishable by five to 10 years in prison.
Reed was lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail.
