The man who shot and killed his estranged wife and her parents has been sentenced in a Butler County courtroom.
Joseph M. Carey, 34, of Bowling Green, agreed to a plea deal that sentences him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to multiple media reports.
Butler County Commonwealth’s Attorney Blake Chambers, about two weeks after the murders, filed a notice that he would seek the death penalty for Carey. But the plea agreement takes that potential punishment off the table.
Chambers said the decision to seek life without the possibility of parole was reached after discussions with the victims’ family.
Carey pled guilty to killing his wife, 30-year-old Angela Carey, and her parents, 79-year-old Charles W. McGranahan and 63-year-old Lupe V. McGranahan, at the McGranahan’s home at 88 Lonnie Snodgrass Road, just of Hwy 79 about 6.5 miles outside Grayson County.
The murders took place the morning of January 19, 2021. Joseph Carey was served with divorce papers in December 2020.
Angela Carey’s three children were in the home at the time of the murders but were unhurt.
In addition to pleading guilty to three counts of murder, Joseph Carey pled guilty to first-degree burglary, three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.
