A former Leitchfield Fire Department chief, Grayson County High School educator and Leitchfield City Council member has passed away.

Gerald “Jerry” Schlosser, 77, died Saturday at Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation.

Schlosser was a Leitchfield Fire Department member for 43 years, serving as fire chief from 2012 until his retirement from the department in 2015. He was also, according to his obituary, Chief Training Officer for many years.

The first female firefighters in the LFD’s history joined the ranks during his tenure as chief.

He taught at Grayson County Middle School from 1968 until 1976, and was assistant principal at the school during the 1976-1977 school year, his obituary states. He then left teaching for several years before returning to the classroom to teach Psychology and Sociology at Grayson County High School.

Schlosser served on the Leitchfield City Council for several years in the 1960s and 1970s and again in the 2000s.

Harold Miller, former Leitchfield City Council member and current Leitchfield mayoral candidate, was one of Schlosser’s students and later served with him on the city council. Miller, on Monday night, remembered a man who wanted to make Leitchfield a better place because of his undying love for the city.

“I knew Jerry very well. I first met him when I was eight-, nine- or 10-years-old. I later served with him on the council,” Miller said. “He helped me immediately after I got on the council. He and I had lots of conversations about the welfare of the city. We would talk for hours, going over every problem the city had.”

“He loved Leitchfield, Miller said, “he deeply cared for our city.”
