Leitchfield police are investigating multiple reports of damage to private property over the last few weeks, including severe damage to fields and yards, and are asking for the public’s help “in curbing these incidents.”

“Over the last couple of weeks, the Leitchfield Police Department has received numerous reports of property damage in our area,” LPD Det. Sgt. Ian Renfrow said. “Officers are investigating reports, specifically in the area of the Leitchfield Aquatic Center, the campus of ECTC near Wallace Avenue, and the Grayson County High School/Lawler Campus.”

Renfrow added that the “offenders are leaving the roadway in pickup trucks and ‘mudding’ in these open areas.”

The consequences of such actions could result in felony charges as well as costly restitution.

“While these activities are thrilling and enjoyable to the actors, it is causing serious damage to yards which can cost thousands of dollars to fix,” Renfrow stated. “As another way to help us decrease these occurrences, we encourage parents to be vigilant as well. If your child comes home with a muddy vehicle, question them about it.”

He said that parental involvement, if indeed the damage is being caused by juveniles, “will go a long way in preventing further issues.”

Additionally, Renfrow encourages parents to education children on the possible punishment if caught.

The applicable Kentucky Revised Statute, KRS 512.020-.040, includes three separate degrees of criminal mischief charges.

“The severity of the offense is determined by the amount of property damage incurred. The level of charge could reach a class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison. Also, be aware that in a case such as this, restitution (reimbursement for damages), could be sought and the offender would be responsible to pay for the damages they have caused. Additionally, parents could be held financially responsible for damages caused by their children,” Renfrow said.

“Again, we appreciate any and all assistance from the public in these investigations,” Renfrow added.

Anyone with any information about these incidents should contact the Leitchfield Police Department at 270-259-3850.
