During his Team Kentucky update on Thursday, Governor Andy Beshear announced that the state’s new mental health crisis hotline will launch on Saturday, July 16.
The hotline can be found by dialing 988.
The move is part of a nationwide departure away from the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, 800-272-8255, which will remain available during the changeover.
The 988 number was created to connect Kentuckians facing thoughts of suicide, mental health distress, or an addiction crisis with trained counselors who can help. The hotline will be available 24/7 and professionals will respond to calls or text messages from those seeking help.
This is also open to those who have a loved one who might need crisis support.
“My administration has always prioritized mental health the same as physical health,” Beshear said on Thursday. “And with the launch of 988, we have made it easier for Kentuckians to reach out and get the assistance they need and deserve.”
According to the CDC and World Health Foundation, “Between 1999 and 2019, the suicide death rate increased 33%. There were nearly 46,000 deaths by suicide in 2020, making it the 12th-leading cause of death in the United States.”
A more formal announcement of the lifeline will be hosted by the governor on Monday in Frankfort.
