A Leitchfield man has been arrested on drug charges after an early morning report of gunfire on Stone Street.

The Leitchfield Police Department and Grayson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call in the 100 block of Stone Street Tuesday morning at approximately 3:10.

Upon arriving and after an investigation, police attempted to make contact with 61-year-old Ronnie E. Cockriel at his Stone Street residence. But Cockriel, a convicted felon, refused to answer the door.

LPD Sgt. Keith Harrell left the residence at approximately 4:30 to obtain a search warrant for the property, leaving LPD Det. Kevin Smith, Officer DJ Newton and Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Luedke to guard the home.

Cockriel, though, peacefully exited the residence at 5:15 Tuesday morning.

Police were granted the search warrant just before 7:30 Tuesday morning and conducted a search of the residence where officers located methamphetamine, marijuana and synthetic drugs.

Cockriel was arrested and charged with two counts of trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine, drug unspecified), trafficking in marijuana, possession of synthetic drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.

Cockriel, according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, was convicted in Grayson County in June 2019 for trafficking in a controlled substance (methamphetamine), with a persistent felony offender enhancer. He was also convicted in Grayson County in November 2010 for manufacturing methamphetamine.

Cockriel is on parole until May 2030.
