A Meade County volunteer firefighter and a Breckinridge County man have been critically injured in a three-vehicle accident involving an ambulance.
Kentucky State Police Post 4 spokesman Scotty Sharp said troopers responded to the accident Tuesday night at approximately 7:35 at the intersection of the Joe Prather Highway and Hwy 60 in Meade County.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found that a Meade County EMS ambulance was traveling north on Joe Prather Highway with its emergency equipment activated when it was struck by a westbound 2006 Chevrolet Impala, being driven by 39-year-old Billy Smith, of Irvington.
The impact caused the ambulance to “roll over” and hit Lloyd Claycomb, a volunteer firefighter with the Flaherty Fire Department. Claycomb was collecting money for the Crusade for Children, Sharp said.
The ambulance then struck a 2021 Ford F-350, being driven by Romeror O. Josias, of Guatemala.
Smith and Claycomb were airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries. The latest report indicates Claycomb will recover. There is no information on Smith’s current condition.
The driver of the ambulance and a passenger, neither were identified by police, were transported to Baptist Health Hardin with non-life threatening injuries.
Josias reported no injuries.
