A Calloway County deputy and suspect are dead after a shooting in Marshall County.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the double shooting that occurred Monday afternoon at approximately 2:10 in Benton.

While authorities have not released information on what preceded the exchange of gunfire, the 100 block of West 5th Street, in front of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and near the Marshall County Detention Center, was blocked off to allow police to investigate the deadly incident.

Both the deputy and suspect were transported to a local hospital where they died, Kentucky State Police said.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear released the following statement:

“Britainy and I ask Kentuckians to join us in holding the family and loved ones of the Calloway County Deputy in their prayers. This deputy has paid the ultimate sacrifice today while serving our commonwealth. Let us honor the life, bravery and service of this deputy.”
