A Falls of Rough man has died after a riding lawn mower he was operating accidentally traveled into Rough River Lake.

Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:15, the Falls of Rough and Leitchfield Fire Departments, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and EMS were dispatched to the 800 block of Green Farms Road (Hwy 110).

Upon arriving at the scene, officials learned that 62-year-old Jeffrey Kurbis had been cutting his grass on a steep hill a few hundred yards behind his residence.

Kurbis is thought to have lost control of his Kubota zero-turn mower on the hill before traveling into Rough River Lake. It took Leitchfield Fire Department divers Kevin Pharis and Brian Jaggers only a short time to recover Kurbis’ body in the 63 degree water.

The body was located by a neighbor and Falls of Rough fire department members.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Grayson County Coroner Joe Brad Hudson.

Kurbis was a teacher at Breckinridge County Middle School. He moved to Falls of Rough from Washington state just over a year ago because the area is centrally located, as he has children who live in states north and south of Kentucky, friends said.
