A school bus containing 30 middle school students in McCracken County was flipped onto its side after being struck by an SUV.
The crash occurred Tuesday afternoon at approximately 2:30 at the intersection of Blandville Road and Highland Church Road, about four miles west of Paducah. The bus contained students from Lone Oak Middle School.
Paducah police told WPSD.com that the 55-year-old bus driver reported looking both ways before turning left. As he began making the turn, the bus was hit “in the rear portion of the left side by an SUV, causing the bus to spin and tip over onto its side,” the television station reports.
A dozen students were transported to Paducah area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, McCracken County Schools said. Seven additional students were taken to the ER by their parents as a precaution.
None of the students were admitted to a hospital.
The driver of the SUV, a 17-year-old boy, was airlifted to a Nashville hospital.
The school district issued the following statement on the crash:
“On April 26 at 2:30 p.m. Lone Oak Middle School Bus 252 was involved in an accident at the intersection of Blandville Road and Highland Church Road. Thirty students from LOMS were on the bus at the time of the accident. Eleven students were transported to Baptist Health Paducah and one was transported to Mercy Health Paducah with non-life-threatening injuries. Seven students were transported by their parents to local hospitals. The Paducah Police Department is investigating the incident with the full cooperation of the McCracken County School District.”
