A central Kentucky woman experienced the luckiest form of bad luck when doctors discovered a brain tumor as she was being treated after being shot in the head by a stray bullet.

The Versailles Police Department responded to the shooting Saturday night just before midnight at a residence on Mundy’s Landing Road, according to a report by WKYT.com.

The investigation showed a stray bullet struck Peggy Bentley in the face as she sat at a dining room table. Bentley does not live at the home but was caring for the property owner’s special needs daughter, the television station reports. Bentley has provided the service for 10 years.

Bentley, who remained conscious after being shot, was transported to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center where a CT scan revealed she had a brain tumor.

The tumor was taken out Tuesday, but the bullet, for now, remains lodged in Bentley’s head.

Police arrested 27-year-old Joshua Owens, of Wilmore, and charged him with second-degree assault and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine). Authorities said Owens, who was visiting a friend, was shooting at coyotes when the stray bullet struck Bentley.

He is lodged in the Woodford County Detention Center on a $15,000 cash bond.
