While not a finished product, the addition of K-9 Officer Zeus is paying dividends for the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.
Zeus, an East German Shepherd, joined the sheriff’s office in late February when the K-9 and Deputy Sean Fentress were certified in narcotics detection.
“In Zeus’ first month-and-a-half on the road, he has detected and removed marijuana, drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine,” Sheriff Norman Chaffins said. “(He) even assisted Kentucky State Police by tracking and apprehending one of Grayson County’s Most Wanted, Joseph Parks.”
In that case, on Saturday afternoon March 26 at approximately 4:00, a trooper spotted the 37-year-old Parks on Morgantown Street. Parks owns a lengthy criminal record and has a history of running from law enforcement.
When approached by the trooper, Parks fled on foot into the Center Street area of Caneyville, near what is commonly referred to as Dewey’s Trailer Park.
Fentress and Zeus then responded to the scene and in a few minutes, Zeus’ keen nose tracked Parks for about 230 yards, leading police directly to the suspect, who was arrested.
Tracking fugitives is a bonus, though, as Zeus’ primary responsibility is detecting the presence of narcotics; an area he’s proven to be quite proficient in, even as he is only beginning his law enforcement career.
“Zeus and Fentress continue to hit the ground running by detecting suspected heroin and fentanyl during traffic stops with many of the stops leading to the arrests of several individuals who would have otherwise gone on to sell and/or use these illegal substances,” Chaffins said.
Zeus was purchased through Southern KY K-9 where owner, Daniel Burris, continues to work with Fentress and Zeus, Chaffins noted. The dynamic duo also continues to train with Family First K-9 and the McLean County Sheriff’s Office.
“Our office is grateful for the assistance given to us from the above entities,” Chaffins stated, “and we look forward to showcasing Zeus in the coming weeks and months as he continues to improve his skills.”
