The body of a Louisville man who jumped into the Ohio River in January as he attempted to save a woman has been found more than 100 miles downstream.

The body of 34-year-old Adam Thomas was found near Newburgh, Indiana, just east of Evansville, on Saturday.

Thomas leapt into the Ohio River in downtown Louisville on January 13 around noon as he tried to save a woman who had jumped into the river near the city’s Historic Wharf.

Her body has not been found, and police said they will not release her identity until her body is recovered.

“Due to the swift current and river levels and significant amount of debris in the water, our rescue efforts were limited to surface levels,” Louisville Fire Department Major Bobby Cooper told The Courier Journal.

The Warrick (Ind.) County Coroner’s Office identified Thomas, and said in a press release:”The actions of Mr. Thomas were a true act of heroism and took great courage. Mr. Thomas placed himself in harms way in order to help another and ultimately sacrificed his life in doing so.”
