Grayson County Fiscal Court on Tuesday agreed to begin accepting bids to tear down the apartment complex behind the old Leitchfield Police Department headquarters.
In June 2021, the court approved the purchase of the old LPD headquarters at 117 South Main Street. Additionally, the county purchased the apartment complex behind the former police department building, with plans to level the complex to make room for an addition onto the building and expand parking.
Residents of the East Market Street building have found other housing, according to officials.
Adding on to the existing building will enable the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office to move from the Leitchfield Town Square to the old police department building.
A drive-thru will be added to the building, as well, making it more convenient for residents to pay property taxes.
The current Grayson Co. Sheriff’s Office headquarters will be sold.
Overdose deaths up
Following a nationwide trend, Grayson County experienced a 16 percent increase in overdose deaths in 2021, Coroner Joe Brad Hudson told magistrates. According to the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP), Grayson County had eight overdose deaths in 2020.
The overdose deaths in the county were not tied to any particular drug, Hudson said, but rather a wide array of drug abuse, possibly brought on by COVID-19 mitigation efforts such as lockdowns, and pandemic-related depression.
