The family of a girl dragged and permanently injured by a Jefferson County Public Schools bus has reached a multi-million dollar settlement with the school district’s insurance company.

Ally Rednour was seven-years-old in May 2015 when she was dragged approximately 1,000 feet (nearly a quarter-mile) by the school bus when her backpack became stuck in the door as she exited the vehicle. The bus, traveling at 20 miles per hour, only stopped when a driver in front of the bus saw Ally being dragged and slammed on the brakes.

The school bus driver, Melissa Sanders, was fired for not following protocol for when a child exits a bus.

Travelers Indemnity Company, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal, agreed to pay the Rednour family $4.8 million “in a cash structured settlement.”

“The family’s attorney, Bo Bolus, said Ally suffered both physical and mental injuries from the dragging, including disfiguring scars on her legs and permanent nerve damage that caused neuropathic pain,” the newspaper reports.

Ally was in the first grade at Wilkerson Elementary School in the Valley Station section of Louisville at the time of the incident.
