A Wayne County Middle School student has died after collapsing at school on Tuesday.
The 13-year-old girl was discovered unresponsive on the bathroom floor at the school, located in Monticello, just before 8:30 Tuesday morning. She was transported to Wayne County Hospital where she died.
School district spokeswoman Linda Jones told news outlets that the girl became responsive after she collapsed and that “proper medical protocol was followed.”
Wayne County Coroner Gordon Hicks, who said the girl had a “medical episode,” added that an autopsy will be performed at the state Medical Examiner’s office in Louisville to determine the cause of death.
Hicks also said the teenager had a few medical issues but that they weren’t severe.
