A Leitchfield man has been jailed after crashing into the same Leitchfield apartment complex that suffered a major fire fewer than five months ago.
Tuesday afternoon at approximately 1:30, Leitchfield Police and Fire Departments and EMS responded to 402 West Main Street (at the corner of Layman Drive) on the report of a car versus apartment building accident.
Upon arriving at the scene, police found a Chevrolet Sonic, being driven by 39-year-old Terry “Matt” Morris, had been traveling west on West Main when the vehicle crossed the eastbound lane and left the road. The car traveled into a side yard and struck the corner of the apartment building, ripping off siding, down spouts and other building components while exposing the insulation.
The vehicle continued by breaking apartment windows as it traveled the length of two apartments. The vehicle appeared to have struck a grill and at least two garbage cans, tossing bags of garbage (and other debris) into the front and side yards of the complex. The vehicle came to a stop after traveling off-road for about 150 feet.
No injuries were reported.
Morris fled the scene on foot, with witnesses giving his description to authorities. Approximately 10 minutes later, though, he returned to the scene of his own accord.
Morris was arrested and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, DUI, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to maintain insurance. He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
In September 2021, the same apartment complex suffered a major fire which destroyed multiple units. The fire was ruled accidental and was likely ignited by a carelessly discarded cigarette, LFD Chief Tim Duvall said. No one was injured.
