A basement fire in Leitchfield early Wednesday morning came within minutes of spreading to the rest of the structure.
Wednesday morning at approximately 12:30, the Leitchfield Fire Department responded to the 700 block of West Main Street after smoke filled the home.
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found dense smoke inside the home and rolling out of the front door and back of the residence. Firefighters made entry into the basement of the home and found several items on fire. The blaze was quickly extinguished.
The occupant made it safely out of the home.
While investigating the fire, Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said he noted a “strange smell,” possibly an accelerant, in the basement. He also noted that the basement is not used by the occupant and has been “sealed off” from the rest of the residence. He labeled the fire “suspicious.”
Duvall contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office, with an arson investigator expected to arrive at the home on Wednesday.
There were no injuries reported and firefighters cleared the scene at 2:10 a.m.
