The Grayson County High School Cougar basketball team will recognize the 2001 3rd Region championship team on Friday evening.
That night, the Cougars will play Collins High School who is coached by GCHS Hall of Famer, and a member of the 2001 team, Chris Gaither.
“When the idea was floated to me, I contacted Chris and asked if he’d be interested,” said head coach Travis Johnston. “Obviously it’s going to be good to have him back. He’s a hometown favorite.”
Grayson County won the 2001 championship with an 86-75 win over Muhlenberg North. That game, which many say is one of the best high school games they have ever seen, saw Gaither go head to head with future WKU and Kentucky guard Patrick Sparks.
Todd Johnston, who was the coach of that team, said that earlier this week he got to rewatch the win over the Stars after being sent the film from the game.
“I was a nervous wreck watching (the game) here today,” Todd Johnston said. “I was still concerned Patrick Sparks was going to find a way to come back and beat us. Luckily, he didn’t.”
The school hopes that almost the entire team will be gathering again on Friday evening.
“A lot of those guys I haven’t seen in 10 or 12 years,” Todd Johnston said. “I hope they can all make it. It’ll be a lot of fun and the night would be topped off if we can get Travis (Johnston) to do his part and end it with a “W” against a really really good Collins team.”
For those unable to attend on Friday night, K105 Digital Productions will have a live stream of the ceremony including a special look back at the winning moment from 2001.
