A massive fire has destroyed a St. Paul Road home.
Saturday morning at approximately 12:45, the East Grayson and Clarkson Fire Departments responded to a structure fire in the 900 block of St. Paul Road.
Upon arriving, firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames, and most of the roof collapsed. Fire had also spread to the basement. With winds gusting up to about 35 miles per hour, battling the blaze effectively was nearly impossible.
“With dismay, we decided containment was all we could accomplish, with the storm front and dangerous weather … it was decided that life safety of the fire personnel was more important than an already destroyed piece of property,” Clarkson Fire Chief Andy Cain said.
A downed power line in the side and back yard of the home created another hazard for firefighters.
East Grayson and Clarkson firefighters worked to contain the blaze before clearing the scene at 3:45 Saturday morning.
The home was a total loss. The occupants were not at the residence when the fire began.
It’s unclear what started the fire, but with a severe thunderstorm passing through the area, it is certainly possible a lightning strike ignited the blaze.
There were no injuries reported.
