Only two days after the Grayson County Health Department issued a warning about an increase in pediatric COVID-19 cases, the agency on Tuesday afternoon said 14 new deaths have been recorded since August 25.

“Since August 25, 2021, we have reported 14 deaths to the state,” GCHD Director Josh Embry said. “Although these deaths will be reviewed to confirm they are all COVID-related, it is truly alarming and heartbreaking for our community to be in such a difficult situation … Sadly, there will be more deaths during this week and the next.”

Officially, the county has had 63 COVID deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

On Tuesday, Grayson County reported 61 new COVID cases, tied for 15th most in the state and raising the county’s rate of occurrence to 156.8, 12th highest in the state, according to the Kentucky Department for Public Health.

The new cases increase to nearly 600 the number of coronavirus cases diagnosed in Grayson County since September 1.

Embry, in warning the community about an increase in children being diagnosed with the virus, said, “We are starting to see an increase in pediatric severe illnesses related to COVID. We knew this was coming, as the same exact thing has played out in southern states.”
