A Lexington resident and a University of Kentucky athlete have won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
Lee Kiefer, 27, of Lexington, won the third gold medal for the U.S. at the Olympic Games by defeating Inna Deriglazova of Russia 15-13 in women’s foil (a foil is one of three weapons used in fencing).
Kiefer became the first American woman to win a gold medal in individual foil. She attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and was a four-time NCAA champion at Notre Dame.
Kiefer is currently a medical student at the University of Kentucky.
She placed fifth at the 2012 London Games and was 10th at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
University of Kentucky athlete Will Shaner, 20, won gold in the men’s 10-meter air rifle competition on Sunday.
Shaner posted an Olympic-record score of 251.6 to edge China’s Sheng Lihao, who took silver with a score of 250.9.
Shaner, one of the top shooters in the country, has had an illustrious career at UK, finishing second at the NCAA individual championships and helping the Cats win the national title earlier this year.
He is one of two Wildcats competing for Team USA in Tokyo. UK star Mary Tucker made her Olympic debut on day one of the Games, finishing sixth in the women’s air rifle final.
