A Franklin County High School counselor has been arrested after bringing a firearm to the school campus.

Mark Kopp, superintendent of Franklin County Schools, said he became aware on Tuesday after school that high school counselor Holly Lawson, 37, of Frankfort, brought a handgun to school grounds. She was approached Wednesday morning by school officials and admitted to having a gun in her purse.

Lawson told police she forgot she had the 9mm handgun in her purse after taking it on a recent Kentucky Derby getaway in Owensboro. School staff members, though, countered that claim by saying that Lawson bragged about having the gun in her purse.

Lawson was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, a class D felony, and lodged in the Franklin County Detention Center. She is no longer listed as an inmate.

Lawson has been employed by Franklin County Schools since 2013. She became a counselor at the high school in 2016.
