A Leitchfield man has been hospitalized after being struck by a truck’s mirror.
Thursday morning at approximately 5:45, the Leitchfield Police Department and EMS responded to the accident in the 500 block of West White Oak Street. Upon arriving at the scene, Officer DJ Newton and Sgt. Keith Harrell found that the passenger side sideview mirror of a westbound Ford F350 struck 49-year-old William T. Loney — who was walking with traffic — in the back of his head as Loney walked on the edge, but in the travel portion of the roadway. The driver of the truck, as well as his passenger, said they did not see Loney, with the passenger saying he thought the truck had hit a deer.
The impact tossed Loney into a ditch and ripped the mirror off the truck.
Witnesses said Loney was initially unresponsive, but he was soon alert and able to answer questions. In addition to the head trauma, Loney appeared to suffer injuries to his left arm and leg.
With the help of the EMS crew and police officers, Loney was able to walk, however unsteady, to the rear of the ambulance where he was placed on a stretcher and transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center.
In addition to Newton and Harrell, several Leitchfield officers arrived at the scene, including Assistant Chief Brandon Cook and Officers Greg Whobrey and Jeff Helvey, among others.
Newton investigated the accident.
