One of only 13 covered bridges in Kentucky has been destroyed in a fire.

The 150-year-old Mt. Zion Covered Bridge in the Mooresville community, near Springfield, caught fire Tuesday night at approximately 11:00, according to Washington County Sheriff Jerry Pinkston.

“This bridge was a historical landmark and saddens many in our community over its loss,” Pinkston said in a statement.

The bridge was built in 1871 and was on the National Register of Historical Places. It spanned 246-feet, making it the longest multi-span covered bridge in the commonwealth, according to the Kentucky Tourism website.

The fire remains under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police.
